The Detroit Lions placed right tackle Gosder Cherilus on season-ending injured reserve today.
Cherilus did not play in Sunday’s win over the Green Bay Packers because of a knee injury he suffered Thanksgiving Day against the New England Patriots.
Corey Hilliard will make his second straight start at right tackle Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers."
“This is big for me for next year, what happens in the future,” Hilliard said. “Just being able to get in there and really have fun. We’ve just got three weeks left in the season, so I’m just happy I get a shot now, really.”
After an injury-filled first two seasons, Cherilus had been one of the Lions’ most consistent linemen. He won a training-camp battle with Jon Jansen for the right tackle job and started 12 games before sitting out last week’s win over the Packers.
Cherilus is the sixth player the Lions have placed on injured reserve in the last week.
Cornerback Brandon McDonald also went on IR today with a broken forearm, and last week, defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch (neck), cornerback Alphonso Smith (shoulder), receiver Derrick Williams (ankle) and coverage specialist Isaiah Ekejiuba (knee) had their seasons ended by injury.
